A little information about the condition

Also known as "Surfer's Eye", Pterygium is an elevated, wedged-shaped growth from the lining of the eyelid onto the cornea. Although is benign, the growth itself can permanently disfigure the eye, reduce significantly the eyesight or even cause blindness. It became known as "Surfer's eye" because it is usually a consequence of being exposed to bright sun for long hours, specially by the water or snow - which reflects the UV rays to your eyes.

Causes
As written above, UV exposure seems to be one of the main reasons for Pterygium development, but wind and dust can also cause it as this leads to Dry Eye Disease, which by consequence will lead to this condition. Genetics may also play an important part, as some people seem to be more at risk than others.

Signs & Symptoms
Pterygium usually appears on the side of your eye that is closest to the nose, but it can also appear on the other sometimes. It is common to have it in one eye only, although sometimes it may appear on both eyes.
There are people who don't experience any symptoms or require treatment in the beginning, but as the growth develops, there can be redness, gritty, itchy or burning sensation, the eyes can become irritated and even swollen.
When the Pterygium starts to invade the cornea, it distorts the shape of the front of the eye, causing the curve of the cornea to change, leading then to refractive errors (Astigmatism in most cases).

Treatment
The treatment depends on the size of the Pterygium itself. If it's just a small growth, your Optometrist/Ophthalmologist can advise the patient on lubricants (eye drops or gels) to temporary reduce symptoms like redness, swelling, itchy or gritty felling.
If the Pterygium is more advanced, the only option is then surgery.

Rub and rinse your contact lenses with the cleaning solution for the recommended amount of time, and then place them in a clean storage case filled with fresh disinfecting solution.
Replace your contact lens case at least once every three months, or more frequently if it becomes damaged or discolored.
Avoid sleeping or napping while wearing contact lenses unless they are specifically designed for overnight wear.

Fun fact: Why are Ray-Bans called Ray-Bans? Because they ban the sun’s rays… Mind. Blown.

Children 'getting sight problems because of eye test delays'

"All children under 16 are entitled to an NHS-funded sight test.

Children are developing permanent problems with their vision because they are not being given eye tests early enough, optometrists have warned.

An Association of Optometrists survey of 1,200 people indicated a quarter of school-age children had not been taken for a sight test by their parents.

Of parents surveyed, 52% thought tests would be given in primary school.

While some schools do offer screening, the tests are less comprehensive than those provided free on the NHS.

Delayed diagnosis can make treatment for sight problems such as amblyopia, known as "lazy eye", much less effective.

One in 50 children will develop amblyopia, where one or both eyes are unable to build a strong link to the brain, causing vision to not develop properly.

The NHS recommends that children should be screened for the condition when they turn four because it becomes harder to treat after the age of six.

Treatments include glasses and using an eye patch or eye drops to obscure the vision in the stronger eye to make the weaker one work harder.

'It made me feel like a terrible parent'

Jane Thompson's daughter, Eve, was diagnosed with amblyopia at the age of seven.

The optometrist in her case said it was too late to try eye-patching for Eve, although prescription glasses have helped improve her vision.

Eve is now 14.

Jane, from West Yorkshire, said: "It made me feel like a terrible parent, really, because you want to do your best by your children and then finding out that there is a problem that could've been sorted earlier, but you weren't aware of it, was really hard to handle."

Eve said: "I'd always been seeing out of my right eye and didn't realise anything was wrong.

"My right eye - I can see and it's how it should be. But then as soon as they cover it up and everything's blurry, it's quite scary - I can't see out of this eye."

Chloe was diagnosed with amblyopia at the age of three

In contrast, Nicola Rothera's daughter, Chloe, five, was diagnosed with amblyopia at the age of three and was young enough to use an eye patch.

"If I'd had left her eyesight the way it was, then the left eye wouldn't have been within the legal driving limits, so it would have restricted her in future life," said Nicola, from Bradford.

"An eye test at a certain age should be compulsory because it may be the case with some children they might not have their first eye test until they're maybe six, or possibly older, and at that point you're restricting time, if there is a problem, in which to be able to correct their vision."

'Massively important'

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) also surveyed 1,246 practising optometrists and found:

74% had seen children in the past year whose vision problems could have been treated more successfully with an earlier diagnosis
Of these, 89% had diagnosed cases of amblyopia in the past year that could have been better treated if they had been spotted earlier

Farah Topia, from the AOP, said: "Catching conditions early can be massively important for a child's development.

"For amblyopia, treating a condition early means that the chances of improving the vision in that eye are a lot better.

"All children under 16 are entitled to an NHS-funded sight test.

"It's really important for us to make parents aware that this is available for them and available for their children to access."

The AOP's A B See campaign calls on parents to take their children for an NHS-funded sight test at local opticians every two years, or more often if their optometrist recommends it.

Three police forces will test eyesight of all drivers stopped

Police forces in England are planning to test every motorist they stop in a bid to clamp down on drivers with defective eyesight.

Drivers who fail to read a number plate from 20m (65ft) away when stopped by police will have their licences revoked immediately in a new crackdown.

Police say data from the tests will be used to improve understanding of the extent of poor driver vision.

The forces taking part are Thames Valley, Hampshire and West Midlands.

Officers can request an urgent revocation of a licence through the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) if they believe the safety of other road users will be put at risk if a driver remains on the road.

Under current rules, the only mandatory examination of a driver's vision takes place during the practical test, when learners must read a number plate from 20 metres.

What are the rules about eyesight and driving? (DVLA)

After a person has obtained a licence, it is up to them to inform the DVLA if they develop vision problems.

The DVLA said if a licence has been revoked because a driver has failed the eyesight test, evidence must be provided on reapplication showing that the driver's vision meets the required standard.

If the evidence provided is acceptable, the agency will require an additional eye test.

Sgt Rob Heard, representing the police forces taking part in the campaign, said: "Not being able to see a hazard or react to a situation quickly enough can have catastrophic consequences."

What happens if your licence is revoked?

If your licence is revoked - which can occur for a number of medical reasons - you will have to apply for a new one, paying the fee as you would for a first licence.
The DVLA will give you a disqualification period, during which a driver cannot apply for a new licence.
You can then reapply eight weeks before the end of this period, and you may need to send evidence that you are fit to drive. The letter from the DVLA will tell you if this is the case.
Not having a valid driving licence will often mean that your insurance is invalid.

He warned that officers will be carrying out eyesight checks "at every opportunity".

The power to revoke licences was introduced in 2013 under Cassie's Law, named after 16-year-old Cassie McCord, who died when an 87-year-old man lost control of his vehicle in Colchester, Essex.

It later emerged he had failed a police eyesight test days earlier, but a legal loophole meant he was allowed to continue driving.

The Minor Eye Condition Service (MECS) is a service provided by certain Opticians around your living area for Dry Eyes, Flashes & Floaters, Red Eyes, etc. This is a free service under NHS and the main target is to stop patients from filling in GP’s appointments and losing time in their offices, as they are not equipped with the right instruments to do the full extended eye health check that you might need. We provide care for the following symptoms:

Dry Eyes

This is a common chronic (long-term) condition that may be caused because our eyes do not produce enough tears, or because the tears we have evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly across the front of the eye. The symptoms usually happen in both eyes that can feel itchy, irritated, sandy or gritty, stinging and, in severe cases, can experience blurred vision.Dry eyes can be very uncomfortable, but rarely causes any serious eye damage.

Flashes & Floaters

Floaters are very common, normally harmless and more common in short-sighted or older people. They often look like small dark spots or small pieces of hair/cobweb that appear to be floating in your eyes.

You also can experience flashes of light instead and these are usually due to movement of the gel inside the eye. Very occasionally, flashes or an increase in floaters can be a sign of a retinal detachment which needs treating as soon as possible.

R ed Eye

Red eye has many different causes, which can be only diagnosed when the patient has a full eye health check. Might be due to dry eyes, air conditioning, allergies, etc., so it definitely needs a MECS appointment to determine what seems to be the condition causing it.

World Day of Encephalitis

Bringing some awareness about a disguised disease

What is Encephalitis?

Encephalitis is a serious condition in which the brain tissue becomes inflamed (swollen) and it can affect any one at any age. This inflammation can be caused either by an infection that invades the brain (infectious encephalitis) or through an autoimmune attack to the brain by mistake (post-infectious or autoimmune encephalitis). There are up to 6,000 cases in the UK each year and potentially hundreds of thousands worldwide.

Encephalitis can be cause by pretty much every virus but not everyone will develop it. A strong immune system plays an important part in this, and so does vaccination.

How can this condition affect my visio n ?

Unfortunately the symptoms vary from one individual to another, but some of the ones that affect your vision are:

- Sensitivity to bright lights;

- Blurred vision;

- Double vision;

- Uncontrollable eye movements, such as side-to-side eye movement .

Because this condition affects the brain tissue and its cells it is very difficult to predict the outcome but usually the symptoms can slowly be reversed once the brain heals.

Acanthamoeba Keratitis: A rare condition that affects contact lens wearers

Today as it is the International Rare Disease Day, we are going to put out some information about a Disease caused
by the Amebae Acanthamoeba, called Acanthamoeba Keratitis and what you should do to avoid it. This organism is easily found everywhere in the world, and it likes to live in the soil, dust and all sources of water (sea, rivers, hot springs, lakes, marsh, etc). This Amabae causes an infection in your cornea called Acanthamoeba Keratitis and, although rare, because it likes to live in water sources, it is more common to find it in among Contact Lens Wearers.

Why does it mainly affect Contact Lens wearers?
Unfortunately some patients are not aware of the dangers that might come from improper handling. Using tap water to clean or store contact lenses or having poor contact lens hygiene increases the risk of infection. Examples of poor lens care are:
- Not using disinfection solutions properly or at all;
- Reusing the solution in the contact lens case;
- Failing to empty and dry the contact lens case after use;
- Storing lenses in water overnight;
- Use Saline Solution to store them;
- When they fall on the floor or anywhere that might contain bacteria, not disinfecting them before putting them back in the eyes.

Wearing contact lenses when swimming or taking a shower also increases the risk, so does putting lenses in with your hands wet from tap water.

Buying contacts online, costume stores, etc, might also increase your chances to develop this infection, as this places will not worry about storing contact lenses properly (humid spaces with no ventilation, wet boxes, direct exposure to the weather conditions, etc).

In the UK it is forbidden to supply Contact Lenses without a Eye Examination & Contact Lens check-up in date. This prevents you from buying something that might not be compatible with your eyes anymore, prescription and material wise. Contact Lenses are always changing parameters and materials, for the patients safety and comfort.

Opticians will advise you on the prescription, they will teach you how to put them on and take them off and they will explain how to handle them according to the type of contact lenses you need (dailies, monthly's, RGP's, etc).

Salt Awareness Week & Eye Health

According to WASH (Wold Action on Salt & Health) “no country is on track to achieve a 30% reduction in salt intake by 2025 and no country has reached the World Health Organisation's recommended intake of less than 5g per day. We also know that too much salt in our diet raises blood pressure, which puts us at increased risk of stroke and heart disease.”

Salt does not only affect your general health, it also affects your eye health, but so does your whole diet.

Does my diet affect my eye health? How?
The answer is yes. A diet with high levels of salt may add to your Cataract formation and also increases the Blood Pressure, which can influence your Intraocular Pressure, as it leads to restricted blood flow to your eyes. Like salt, a diet full of saturated fat and sugars can also increase the risk of eye disease. Therefore, having a healthy diet is important for your general wellbeing, as it can prevent or delay problems such as Macular Degeneration, Cataracts and other eye problems. This said, it is also important to avoid prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, live a non-smokers life and get your eyes checked annually or whenever your Optometrist/Ophthalmologist recommends you. Don't forget, sunglasses are great when you're outdoors, and taking breaks from digital devices is essential and it will make your eyes less tired at the end of the day, but just as important (if not more) is the attention we must give to the food and liquids we consume on a daily basis.

Foods that improve/maintain my eye health:

Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Apricots, Broccoli, Grapefruit, Onions, Spinach & Plums : These ingredients are full of Beta-Carotene (good source for Vitamin A), which promotes the retina health.
Fatty Fish (Wild Salmon, Tuna, Trout, etc) : These fish are full of good fat, especially Omega-3; they also provide docosahexaenoic acid which is critical for good retinal function.
Eggs : Eggs contain Zeaxanthin, Lutein and Zinc, which can help to protect your eyes against Macular Degeneration.
Romaine Lettuce, Kale & Spinach : These greens contain Zeaxanthin and Lutein, and studies show that when consumed in sufficient quantities, they help to reduce the chance of developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration, one of the leading causes of vision lost in the world.
Oysters : They contain a high concentration of Zinc that helps to built up not just your eyes, but also your immune system, as it is an antioxidant that removes free radicals from your body, making it easier then to absorb Vitamin A. Oysters are also a source of Selenium, which is beneficial for your eyes and together with Zinc, they can substantially reduce your chances of developing Glaucoma.
Water, 100% Fruit Juices & Non-Caffeinated Herbal Teas : It is crucial to keep yourself hydrated to help reduce irritation from dry eyes and to keep your immune-system healthy and strong.

Also very important is to limit the consumption of red meats, dairy produts and fried food as they increase the risk of developing Macular Degeneration, as well as other health problems. Keep in mind that the way you cook your food can be the main reason that separates meals from being healthy or unhealthy.

National Eye Health Week

Bringing Awareness about your Eye Health

National Eye Health Week is all about promoting your eye health and explaining why we need to get our eyes tested regularly. Our eye health is just as important as our general health, and that is why we need regular check-ups like the ones we have with our GP or our Dentist. So, with today's blog our goal it to deliver information about the when's and why's that we all should be aware when it come to our eye health.

When and how often should we have our eyes tested?
Regular eye check-ups should start at the age of 4, unless there are symptoms. If you notice that your child might have a lazy or wondering eye, watches tv or devices really close up, rubes and/or blinks a lot while concentrating/reading/watching something, those are definitely signs to have a check-up. Check-ups in children should happen at least once a year, unless the Optometrist advises you otherwise.
On the other hand, from the age of 15 we will probably need a check-up once every 2 years. Again that can change if the Optometrist feels the need to change the recall date.
There are some exceptions though. Diabetics, patients with Glaucoma or >70 are likely to need an eye test every year, just to keep a close update on any eye changes or problems that are likely to happen.

What can be detected with an Eye Health Check-up?
With your eye test we will offer the Retinal Photography as an extra. Retinal Photography is basically a photograph of the inside of your eye, and that is what provides us with a detailed information of what your eye health looks from the inside out. A regular eye examination plus the Retinal Photography service will help us detect ocular refraction defects as well as cataracts, glaucoma, high blood pressure, tumours, arthritis, uveitis, blepharitis, sclerites and any other eye infections/conditions.

Consequences of not having your eyes checked regularly...
Like mentioned before, the full eye check-up will help us detect any early signs of Diabetes, Glaucoma, High Blood Pressure and even Tumours. Some of this conditions can be treated if found soon enough.
Did you know that 2 million people, in the UK only, are living with sight loss currently? Half of this numbers could've been easily avoidable if they had their eyes tested regularly. This is why it is so important to look after your eye health as much as your general health.

Do I pay for my Eye Health Check-up?
People exempt of paying for their eye health check-ups are:
- Children under 16 years old;
- Full time students from 16 to 18 years old;
- Patients with Diabetes/Glaucoma;
- Patients over 40 who's parents or siblings have/had Glaucoma;
- Patients blind/partially blind;
- Patients prescribed with complex lenses under NHS voucher scheme;
- Patients on a valid HC2 Certificate;
- Patients who are receiving: Income Support, Income based Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, Tax Credit and Universal Credit.

If you are not part of this list, then you are considered as a Private patient, therefor you have to support the full cost of the Eye Examination and Glasses (if needed).

Keep in mind that, as our body, our eyes benefit from our choices too, so keeping a good well-balanced diet, maintaining ourselves hydrated, avoid smoking and wearing protection against the damaging sunlight will definitely keep you on the right track to maintain our eyes healthy.

Learning Disabilities and Visual Impairment

A post dedicated to Sally

Today's post is dedicated to a patient of ours - Sally, who sadly passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sally needed glasses since she was a child, but was always reluctant to wear them. No one ever noticed any other sight problems until she was 26/27 years old when she started to rub her eyes constantly and started to describe an 'itch' on her head. She visited the GP a couple times but nothing was ever mentioned about any sight problems. A few months later, the family noticed that Sally was having some issues with her vision and called a domiciliary optometrist to have her eyes checked, when they found out that Sally had extremely high pressures in her eyes. She was diagnosed with Glaucoma and despite the aftercare that helped lowering her eye pressures, Sally lost almost all her vision, only being able to differentiate between light and dark. Since then Mom - Maureen, tried to bring awareness and better access to regular eye health check-ups for people with learning disabilities.

Our Resident Optometrist, Jig Joshi wrote a few words about that matter:
“Sally & Maureen Rose were vital to the inception of our local service and through this Learning Disabilities Enhanced Optometry Service (Bridge to Vision), we managed to identify adults with vision problems and help them in various different ways to improve, maximise or maintain their eye health and vision. Often it was about making sure people got the specialist eye care they needed from their optometrist and the correct treatment such as glasses, along with support to wear them. It really helped for people to have familiarity and consistency of who they see for their eye care, and to feel comfortable in their surroundings. "

Sally's story makes us wonder how much do we really know about patients with Learning Disabilities and Visual Impairment and how these two are related.

What causes Learning Disability?
The main causes of LD in the United Kingdom are:
- Prematurity;
- Chromosomal disorders;
- Cerebral Palsy;
- Genetic Disorders;
- Metabolic Disorders;
- Toxins (alcohol, drugs, iatrogenic).

What do we mean by Learning Disability?
When we say Learning Disability, we are talking about patients who experience:
- Significant reduced ability to understand new/or complex information and/or skills;
- Reduced ability to cope independently (socially impaired functioning).

This happens before adulthood, with a lasting effect on someone's development, meaning that patients with learning disability will have difficulties in understanding, learning new things and socialising with other people in general. Of course this variants depend on the extend and nature of the disability itself.

Visual Impairment and Learning Disability
The main causes for Visual Impairment in patients with LD are:
- Refractive error;
- Amblyopia;
- Strabismus;
- Congenital Cataract;
- Nystagmus;
- Corneal Problems;
- Optic pathway abnormalities;
- Perceptive and interpretive problems.

According to https://www.learningdisabilities.org.uk/ there are approximately 1.5 million people in the UK with a LD. Patients with a LD may not know that they have a visual problem or may not be able to tell others about it.
Statistics from https://www.rnib.org.uk fact that there are 96,500 adults with a LD who are blind or partially sighted as a result of an eye condition (Cataract or Squint), health conditions (as Diabetes), normal aging of the eye or any other eye conditions associated with LD. It is important to know that patients with LD are 10 times more likely to have serious visual problems, which is normally more severe within patients with profound LD. 6 in 10 people with LD need glasses and often need support to get used to them.

Visual problems can also affect patients with LD in many ways, such as:
- Social isolation: Sight helps people to take part in the world surrounding them. When they experience a visual impairment, because the vision is compromised, these patients tend to get excluded from certain situations or they may even isolate themselves, as they are not aware of what is going on around them;
- Motivation: Poor/low vision may reduce someone's motivation to discover more of their surroundings. Patients with LD often seem to be lacking 'drive' and lack of will to do and control more. Patients who have not learned how to control their environment may appear compliant and passive;
- Communication and Behaviour: As low/poor vision affects the ability to make eye contact, understanding facial expression, body language and gestures, as well as learning and using sign language, this makes it difficult for the visual impaired to communicate with others or to understand communication through facial expression;
- Co-ordinating other senses: Patients with a Visual Impairment and LD take longer to explore and complete tasks as they will find hard to understand the world surrounding them and to predict the actions of others around them. Vision helps us to understand what we hear, touch or taste, helps us to predict and anticipate what's coming and how to react.

What symptoms should we look out for?
Some unusual behaviour might happen as a strategy to cope with a vision loss or an attempt to make the most out of it. Some possible symptoms are:
- Becoming withdrawn or uncommunicative;
- Being clumsy and/or falling more;
- Rocking, head shaking or flapping their hands;
- Holding things really close up;
- Rubbing and poking the eyes;
- Feeling confused or disorientated;
- Startled by noised or people approaching.

If these or any other similar symptoms that were never seen before suddenly start to happen, please make sure to book an appointment with an LD Specialist Optometrist. Patients with LD should have at least one eye examination every 2 years, just to make sure there are no significant changes in their eyesight.

Will the test be difficult for them?
Parents, relatives and carers often feel that due to their disability, it might not be possible to carry a full eye examination. With the proper equipment, training and some alternative tests and approaches the Optometrist will be able to adjust to the patient's needs and to deliver a full eye examination.

Raising Awareness on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) & Vision

October is the ADHD Awareness Month and with that we want to bring some information about what ADHD is and how it can affect someone's life.

What is ADHD?
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and it is defined as a mental health condition that affects the patient's brain and therefore the patients behaviour. Patients with ADHD often present the following symptoms:
- Fidgety;
- Hyperactivity;
- Incapacity of concentrating while reading/doing homework;
- Impulsivity;
- Easily bored;
- Distress by school work;
- Inability to sit/stay still;
- Trouble organising tasks and activities;
- Trouble listening when spoken to directly.

Sometimes parents pick up theses symptoms of ADHD in very young children, but keep in mind that even though your child may present symptoms of being hyperactive, easily distracted, impatient or impulsive, doesn't mean that the child has ADHD. Young children will slowly develop attention and self control as they grow up. As they're growing, if they cannot develop such skills and begin/continue to cause problems at school, home and with friends, it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor about ADHD.

What causes ADHD?
There is no one cause for ADHD. It seems to be a result of an interplay between genetic and environmental factors - with genetics being responsible for over 70% of all probability.

Is it ADHD or a Vision Problem?
There are two possible scenarios - children who are misdiagnosed with ADHD for having problems at school & children who do have ADHD and need glasses to help with their difficulties.

Children who cannot see properly because of a refractive error (Myopia, Astigmatism or Hyperopia) will often avoid reading, have difficulties concentrating and studying and have problems at school (cannot see the board or take longer to concentrate). These children may experience headaches, double vision and eye fatigue when doing these tasks, so they will avoid it at all cost and can even get agitated when we insist on them. Children with ADHD will have a hard time concentrating during class times or while doing their homework. You might notice that your child may lose lines when reading and has to use the finger to help him keep place, reading accuracy and speed are below his/hers chronological age, misses out words or letters while reading, homework takes longer than it should, gets rapidly tired at school and often exhausted by the end of a school day, loss of concentration or attention span, etc. When theses symptoms happen, it might indicate that despite the ADHD condition, they might also need a specialist eye examination called SchoolVision which determines the reason for those symptoms. A SchoolVision studies the relationship between visual performance and the occupation of reading, therefore the test is more elaborate that a normal eye examination, taking usually 1 hour for the appointment only. Cholesterol & Your Eyes

Cholesterol Month Awareness

October is the National Cholesterol Month and because of that we wanted to bring some awareness of how High Cholesterol can affect your eyes. High cholesterol happens when you have too much fat substance in your bloodstream, this being caused mainly by a poor diet and sedentary life (eating fried & fast food regularly, smoking, drinking alcohol, not exercising and being overweight). When there is a high level of cholesterol present in your body, it starts to block your blood vessels leading to heart problems, strokes or even eye problems.

Eye Symptoms of High Cholesterol
The high presence of bad cholesterol in your blood can cause problems when it starts to gather in your eyes. It is hard to diagnose underlying problems, but some of the warning signs are:
- White, grey and yellow deposits forming around the cornea;
- Blurry Vision;
- Yellow bumps around the eyes.

These symptoms usually lead to three very serious conditions: AMD , Retinal Vein Occlusion & Corneal Arcus .

AMD: Age Related Macular Degeneration is a common eye condition where cells in the middle of the retina die or are damaged, causing loss of central vision as a result of damage in the macula, making it difficult to see fine details clearly. That damage can be caused by drusen - which are small yellow deposits of fatty lipids that accumulate on the retina. Drusen can be a harmless sign of age, but when in great quantities and larger ones, it may indicate a early stage of AMD. Note that most damage that occurs in the macula cannot be reversed and AMD affects overs 600,000 people across the UK.

Retinal Vein Occlusion: Happens when these lipids break blood vessel walls, causing cloth/s in the retina, leading to either blurred vision or vision loss. Although some occlusions can be removed only causing temporary vision problems, sometimes the patient can have suffer permanent damage in the eye.

Corneal Arcus: When cholesterol forms around the rim of the cornea, indicating a very high level of cholesterol that might lead to other health problems.

How to protect your eyes?
Cholesterol can be prevented with a good diet, good hydration & exercise. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables will provide you with antioxidants, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C and E, reducing the fat in your bloodstream, the pressure in your veins and the likelihood of developing a cloth. Try to avoid red meats, drink at least 1.5lt of water daily and having a exercise routine, would also help to lower your cholesterol numbers and improve your health.

Don't Swerve a Sight Test

With the clock going back an hour, you might notice that you are spending more time driving during night time. This brings some concern as during the dark hours, our vision is not as sharp as it is during day time, leading to more accidents on the road. It is estimated that during lockdown, 5 million routine eye tests have been missed, bringing even more concern about how safe are we when we drive.

According to a survey by the Association of Optometrists:

54% of optometrists have seen a patient in the last month whose vision is below the legal standard and is unable to meet the required standard using corrective lenses, who continues to drive;
22.2% believe that they are advising more patients not to drive than previously;
40.2% have had a conversation with a patient who has concerns about a family member's ability to drive due to their vision.

These results show us that drivers don't realise how important vision is while driving and the impact on the safety of others who also use the road. Driving especially at night can be tricky as the driver might come across trouble with oncoming headlines, difficulty seeing road markings and/or street sight, difficult with judging distance and speed. If this happens, you might want to have your eyes tested as there might be some visual concerns.

Standards of vision for driving

You must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres. Also, you need to meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) using both eyes together or, if you have sight in one eye only, in that eye. An adequate field of vision test may also be needed in some cases - it it up to the optician to decide whether you need it or not.

What also happens with almost every driver (needing glasses or not) is the complains about the glare that they get from the traffic lights and other cars. For that you can get glasses, even without prescription, with a certain type of anti-reflective coating that will help reflect the lights and help to sharpen your vision at night. Any complains like theses should be addressed with your optician.

Diabetes & Your Eyes

Today we are raising awareness of a condition that affects millions of people around the world and one of the most common causes of blindness. But did you know this can be prevented and/or treated when early diagnosed and with regular eye health check-ups?

What is Diabetes exactly?

Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition in which the body does not properly process food to use as energy. Most of the food that we eat is turned into glucose (sugar) and released into the bloodstream, for our bodies to use as energy. The pancreas then, creates a hormone called insulin to help the glucose reach the cells in our bodies. People who suffer from diabetes cannot produce enough insulin or cannot use their own insulin as well as it should, leading to an increase of glucose (sugar) in your bloodstream. There are 2 types of diabetes:

- Type 1 Diabetes : The patient's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. It requires daily administration of artificial insulin by injection or insulin pump;

- Type 2 Diabetes : The patient’s body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells do not react to it. Usually managed with a combination of a healthy controlled diet and medication (tablets). This type is far more common than type 1.

There is also a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy for some women called gestational diabetes. This happens because their bodies are unable to produce enough insulin to absorb all the glucose. This type usually disappears once the baby is born.

4.7 million of people in the UK have Diabetes, 90% of those being Type 2 diabetics. According to statistics provided by the www.diabetes.org.uk 1 in 10 people over 40’s has now type 2 diabetes.

How does Diabetes affect my eyes?

Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable sight loss in the UK. Diabetes can affect your eyes in many ways and in some cases when left untreated, these complications might even lead to blindness. The most common complication is Diabetic Retinopathy .

Diabetic Retinopathy is a eye disease caused by high levels of glucose (sugar) and blood pressure in your eyes, sometimes causing serious damage in your eyes. When the blood vessels in your eyes are damaged, they can get blocked, leak or grow randomly, meaning the retina won’t get the blood it needs to work properly, and consequent you vision will also be affected.

There are 3 types of Diabetic Retinopathy :

- Stage 1 - Background Retinopathy : Tiny bulges develop in the blood vessels, that may cause slight bleeding, but usually it does not affect your vision. Even though your vision is not yet affected, you will need to prevent the problem from getting worse;

- Stage 2 – Non-proliferative Retinopathy : More severe and extensive changes affect the blood vessels, including more significant bleeding into the patient's eye. The damage is more serious than Stage 1 and will require your eyes to be checked and screened more often;

- Stage 3 – Proliferative Retinopathy : Scar tissue to the eye cells and development of new blood vessels, which are weak and bleed easily. This means you are now at very high risk of losing your sight.

There is also Diabetic Maculopathy which affects the middle of the eye, meaning you won’t be able to read or drive.

How to prevent Diabetic Retinopathy?

It is possible for most people to reduce the risk of developing Diabetic Retinopathy or preventing it from getting worse, by:

- Getting your eyes screened regularly;

- Spotting changes in your eyesight;

- Keeping your blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol in control;

- Taking your diabetes medication as prescribed;

- Having a balanced & healthy diet;

- Exercising and hydrating.

Changes to look out for:

- Floaters – if you start seeing what looks like wispy clouds, small black spots or little threads floating in and out of your vision;

- Dimmer Vision – when your vision looks darker, like you are wearing sunglasses all the time;

- Struggling to see in the dark .

Diabetic Eye Screening

Any person with diabetes >15 should be offered a screening once a year, or as often as the Optometrist advises. Screening should be done for the following reasons:

- Diabetic Retinopathy doesn’t show any symptoms in the earlier stages;

- The condition can cause permanent blindness if not diagnosed and treated promptly;

- Screening can detect problems in your eye before they start to affect your vision;

- When caught early, treatment can help prevent or reduce the chances of vision loss.

Can pregnancy affect my eyes?

What to expect when you're expecting

Pregnancy can be a wonderful experience for a woman, but it's still a taboo to talk about all the side affects that come with it. The nausea and sickness, the lower back pain, sore ankles and heavy legs are not all that you might experience during this period... your eyesight will probably change too. Like most of the hormonal and physical changes, these issues related to vision are usually minor and temporary, and your vision should return to normal after your baby is born or after the baby has stopped breastfeeding. The most common eye changes during pregnancy are:

Pigmentary Changes
- Often the skin of a pregnant woman may experience pigmentary changes that can also affect the eyelids - temporary increase in pigmentation or increasing in existing pigmentation (Conjunctival Naevus). Though this affects almost 90% of pregnant women, it is reversible and generally only requires observation during this period.

Blurred Vision
- Some pregnant women notice mild changes in their vision and often think this might be associated with a change in prescription. This happens as during pregnancy many women retain fluids, which often affects the fluid present in your eyes, affecting the shape and thickness of your cornea, therefore leading to visual distortion. Not to worry, make sure your optometrist monitors these changes and your vision should be back to normal after delivering or once your baby stops breastfeeding.

Dry Eyes
- Hormonal changes can affect the quality and structure of the tear film, leading to dry eye syndrome. This occurs because the lubricant tears present in the upper and lower eyelid margins have less oil to keep the eyes moist. The usual symptoms for dry eye include excessing tearing, intermittent blurred vision and a gritty or burning sensation, which can be treated with artificial tears and soothing warm compresses. Your Optician would be able to advise the best drops according to your symptoms.

Pre-eclampsia
- One of the things you really need to look out for during pregnancy is your blood pressure. An increase in your blood pressure can lead to pre-eclampsia which requires treatment. The symptoms to look out for in this case are blurred vision, temporary loss of vision, light sensitivity and presence of auras, flashes and/or floaters in your vision. In case you experience any of these symptoms you need to seek advice from your GP or Optometrist promptly.

Diabetes
- When you have diabetes, high levels of sugar in your blood can cause some damaging in the small vessels present in your eyes (Diabetic Retinopathy) and the chances of that happening grow as the pregnancy progresses. It is important to monitor closely the diabetes throughout your pregnancy to make sure that it doesn't affect other areas, such as your eyes. Pregnant women who never had diabetes before can experience Gestational Diabetes during the pregnancy. It is important even for these patients to keep a close look for any changes in their vision and to report them to their Optometrist.

Blepharitis

Condition, Symptoms & Causes

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the oil glands present in your eyelids, and it's a common condition that is usually easily treated. If left untreated though, it might lead to more serious complications like cysts or conjunctivitis.
Usually the GP or your Optometrist/Ophthalmologist would be able to diagnose it by using a magnifying device to look at the edges of your eyelids and how the glands look like, by checking if the eyes are producing enough tears & by checking the texture and how healthy is the skin surrounding your eyes.

Symptoms
Symptoms usually include:
- Sore Eyelids;
- Dry eyes;
- Itchy Eyes;
- Gritty feeling;
- Red eyes;
- Watery eyes;
- Blurry vision;
- Sensitivity to bright lights;
- Red and/or swollen eyelids;
- Presence of flakes/crusts around the roots of your eyelashes;
- Sticky eyelashes - specially in the morning when you wake up.

Causes:
- Skin conditions (like seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea or eczema);
- Excess of bacteria;
- Hormone problems/hormonal imbalance;
- Blocked eyelid oil glands;
- Allergies;
- Viral infections;
- Mites (insect-like organisms, which can cause irritation to humans).

Treatment:
- Artificial tears for red, itchy, gritty or dry eyes;
- Special wipes to clean the eyelids;
- Warm flannels to soften and clean the crust as well as to help with the swollen eyelids;
- Medication in some cases.

Prevention:
Unfortunately there is cure for Blepharitis, but you will be able to manage and treat it easily. If you follow a daily hygiene routine that should be enough to control the symptoms. That routine should include:
- Removing all make-up before bed;
- Making sure to clean your eyelids everyday before you go to bed, even if you don't wear any makeup;
- Be careful when applying any night moisturizers or gels, do not apply it close to your eyelids;
- Using specific eyelid wipes that you can get from your local Optician to regularly clean your eyelids properly.

Complications:
That are some complications that may occur in some cases like loss of eyelashes, clogged glands that might lead to a stye or a chalazion & scarring on your eyelids. When that happens you should let your GP or your Optometrist/Ophthalmologist know as soon as possible.

What is myopia caused from? - A Global Pandemic

What can we do to help your child

Did you know that Myopia is growing exponentially and is now considered a Global Epidemic?

Evidence shows that Myopia is growing around the world, with a recent study estimating that on average, 30% of the world is currently myopic and by 2050, almost 50% will be myopic - that’s 5 billion people! The map below shows how much is estimated that the Myopic population will grow from now to 2050.

Myopia can be defined as a condition of the eye with a spherical equivalent refraction of at least -0.50D that produces poor distance vision. However, the definition of high myopia is rather vague, although of more concern because of the associated pathological complications. High myopia is usually defined as ranging from - 5.00 to - 12.00 D and there is agreement among experts that high myopia increases the risk of pathologies such as cataracts , glaucoma , retinal detachment and macular degeneration all of which can result in irreversible loss of vision .

Myopia Risk Factors

There are 2 main causes when it comes to Myopia development - those are Genetics and Enviroment.

Myopia, particularly high myopia, often exhibits apparent familiar aggregation, and multiple studies have shown that genetic factors significantly contribute to its development.

Even though there seems to be a high ration of inherited Myopia,environment also seems to play a very important role. Increased outdoor activity has been shown to prevent the onset of myopia,with a visible response between the time spent outdoors and the risk of incident myopia. Interestingly, by simply being outside without engaging in a sport or activity has shown to reduce the prevalence of myopia.

There is mounting public concern that modern society’s dependence on computers and handheld technologies may be contributing to the increasing global incidence of myopia as children are spending long periods of time on devices for school work and also during their free time. It is advisable that children should spend at least 2 hours outside every day to profit from the natural sunlight.

How can I help my child?

There are a few things that can be done about Myopia Management, but the 2 that seems to work best are:

A Helpful Guide for Screen Users

This week we are celebrating National Eye Health Week and as a result of that we want to give our patients/followers some tips on how to use screen time. Long periods of screen time with no breaks can really do some damage. The harmful blue light present in devices can be damaging for our eye health and bring serious complications along the way.

So what can you do to minimize visual distress?
1. Use your glasses : If glasses were prescribed during your visit to the Optician and advised to be used on screen time, you should definitely listen to them. By wearing your glasses, your eyes will not struggle to see properly and will feel less stress;
2. Get Anti Reflection Coating : The anti-reflection coating protects our eyes from the damaging blue light and also reflects the glare from all artificial lights. This makes your vision look sharper as there is no glare staying on the lenses;
3. Make sure to take frequent breaks : Use the rule of 20-20-20 - Look away from your device every 20 minutes for 20 seconds on something 20 feet away. This will help your eyes to rest from continues concentration on the device you are looking at;
4. Customise you screen settings : Make sure the light is not to bright as that will tire your eyes quicker. The monitor should be at an arm length away and should be positioned at eye level. Always select a font size of 12pts or above, anything that feels comfortable at that distance so you don't feel your eyes trying to squint to see better;
5. Keep blinking : Even if we don't notice, our blink rate can fall by 60% when we are concentrating on monitors. Shutting your eyes for a few seconds and rolling your eyeballs around with them still closed can give you some instant refresh;
6. Stay hydrated ! Dehydration can increase symptoms of screen fatigue, so make sure to always have your water handy;
7. Regular Eye Examination s - Last but not least, make sure to follow the recall for your eye tests according to your opticians. Anyone >16 years old should have their eyes tested every 2 years, unless your Optician advises you otherwise.

Grass pollen season has just started, here are some tips for you!

What is Hayfever?

Hayfever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common allergy to pollen, dust or mould. It produces cold-like symptoms, such as a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and itchiness.

What causes Hayfever?

Hayfever is caused by an allergic reaction to certain airborne allergens, such as pollen, mold, and dust mites. When these allergens come into contact with the lining of the nose and eyes, the immune system overreacts, releasing histamine and other chemicals that cause inflammation and symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

How does hay fever impact the eyes?

The classic sore eye associated with hayfever is called allergic conjunctivitis (to learn more about conjunctivitis, click here). This is an umbrella term for issues with the clear membrane covering the whites of the eyes and the eyelids. It can be rather unpleasant, but does not pose a risk to your vision. The itching sensation you feel is caused by pollen landing in the eye which leads to the release of histamine in turn irritating the nerve endings. The eyes become bloodshot because the blood vessels dilate and swell to fight off the irritant.

My vision is blurry!

Do not fear, this is very common. The blurriness you feel is associated with watery eyes. The tear ducts produce excess fluid to flush out the pollen, which can sometimes result in a thick gooey substance causing your vision to deteriorate temporarily. Will Hayfever go away?

From the start of Spring to the end of Summer hayfever sufferers will need to be extra vigilant. From late March until the middle of May, tree pollen peaks. From the middle of May until July, grass pollen peaks. And from the end of June until September, weed pollen is at its peak.

As 95% of hay ever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen, mid-May to July is the ‘peak time’ for hay ever. Unfortunately there is no cure, you just need to be extra vigilant and apply preventative measures. These include:

Take over the counter antihistamines.

Cut down on drinking alcohol during the summer months. It contains histamine, a chemical that promotes allergic reactions.

Keep your eyelids clean with the lid wipes available at our practice.

Take artificial tear drops to help flush out the pollen if your eyes are particularly irritated. You can find these at our practice too.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a common condition which causes the surface of your eyes to go red and, often, sticky or watery and your eyes become sore.

What is Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is a common condition which causes the surface of your eye to go red and, often, sticky or watery and your eye becomes sore.

Types of Conjunctivitis:

Conjunctivitis can be caused by infection from bacteria, viruses or other organisms, and also by allergy or inflammation.

Viral conjunctivitis tends to cause a watery red eye and can last for two to three weeks even with the correct treatment. In most cases viral conjunctivitis does not affect your vision but rarely you might notice your vision becomes blurry or you may see glare when looking at lights. This is due to an inflammatory reaction causing small white dots on the cornea, the transparent window at the front of the eye. These usually fade with time, but it can take a few weeks or even months.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is more likely to cause a red eye with a sticky yellow discharge.

I think I may have Conjunctivitis. What should I do?

There is no antiviral medication for viral conjunctivitis and it does not respond to antibiotic drops as it is not caused by bacteria. The best treatment for viral conjunctivitis is to use artificial tears and simple painkillers, with regular lid cleaning and cold compresses. The conjunctivitis disappears when your body becomes immune to the virus and fights the germs off, just as in a cold or flu. Very rarely, steroid drops are given for severe cases of viral conjunctivitis or when the cornea is affected.

Antibiotic drops can be helpful in cases of bacterial conjunctivitis and are often prescribed for a one or two-week course.

Contact lenses should not be worn during any type of conjunctivitis.

Infection control:
Conjunctivitis is contagious and spreads very easily by water droplets (coughing, sneezing) or contact with tissues, flannels, towels, pillowcases and so on. For that reason, it’s really important to wash your hands frequently and dispose of tissues after use to prevent the condition from spreading to other family members or work colleagues.

In addition to proper hand hygiene, it's also important to avoid sharing personal items such as towels, pillowcases, and eye drops. If you have conjunctivitis, it's best to stay at home until the symptoms have subsided to avoid spreading the infection to others. Avoiding close contact with others, and avoiding touching or rubbing your eyes are also important to prevent the spread of infection. For people who wear contact lenses, it's essential to discard the lenses and switch to glasses until the infection is gone. After the infection is cleared, it's important to properly clean and disinfect the contact lenses and lens cases before reusing them.
